Yes. The Iowa Law Enforcement Academy offers POST testing and MMPI testing. They also offer evaluations for sworn peace officers and Reserve officers. ILEA conducts testing at local sites when requested.
ILEA will assist sheriffs’ offices and other agencies with promotional testing.
This testing can be conducted at the ILEA or at the local agency.
Certification through examination means hiring a law enforcement officer trained outside of Iowa. These officers have fewer requirements. The fee page has cost information. The officer should start the process. For information about the CTE process, please call ILEA at (515) 331-5778.
The Iowa Law Enforcement Academy asks that you fill out a change-in-status form for all employees who have legal name changes. Legal name changes can include marriage and divorce. To do this, go to the Forms page. Then select the category of employee you need to report the name change for.

Yes, they can, as long as all of the minimum standards and tests are successfully passed prior to hire.
No. Officers have one year from the date of their employment in which to become certified. This means completing training at an approved law enforcement training facility. An officer who fails to do this is not eligible to work. However, liability implications in placing untrained officers on duty should be very carefully considered.
The minimum standards for Iowa officers does not include Lasik surgery. Each hiring authority has discretion over hiring. Agencies must certify to ILEA that all hiring standards are met. The Academy recommends consultation with eye doctors.
