Regional Academies
Beyond the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy, training for new officers takes place at regional academies around the state of Iowa. Cedar Rapids Police Academy, Des Moines Police Academy and Department of Public Safety (DPS) Academy train their own future officers through programs that range from 17-22 weeks in length.
Hawkeye Community College and Western Iowa Technical Community College train future officers through a shortened academy. Their students have either (1) a two or four year degree in criminal justice or police science with at least 20 credit hours dedicated to those subjects or (2) have completed law enforcement training in another state, commensurate with the basic training required in Iowa (IAC 501–3.4).
